Nan Sterman

California native Nan Sterman is an author, botanist, garden designer, and award-winning garden communicator who lives in Encinitas, California.

Nan is dedicated to the transformation of California’s planted landscapes from overly thirsty and resource intensive to climate appropriate and sustainable. Nan has worked towards this goal since the 1970s when she was involved in the first wave of what we now refer to as the sustainability movement. Her initial training was at the Integral Urban House, a demonstration retrofit Victorian home in Berkeley, California. She went on to earn a botany degree from Duke University, a Masters in biology from UC Santa Barbara, and a Masters in instructional design from San Diego State University.

Nan parlayed her early experiences in sustainability to address modern day issues. She is author of California Gardener’s Guide vol II, the only book about low-water, Mediterranean climate gardens written specifically for California home gardeners. In 2010, she added Waterwise Plants for the Southwest to her publication list.

Nan speaks, teaches, and writes about low water, sustainable and edible gardening, all of which she designs for client’s homes, school gardens, and landscaped public spaces. Her articles appear in the Los Angeles Times, Sunset, Organic Gardening and other major publications. She has a monthly water-wise garden column in the San Diego Union Tribune and is the gardening expert for San Diego public radio’s These Days talk show.

Nan consults to the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College. In addition to creating and teaching classes for the Garden, she advises them on programs, and spent two years as the “Question Answerer” for the Water Smart Pipeline, the Garden’s low-water gardening question-and-answer phone line.

One of Nan’s project is A Growing Passion, a TV show that takes viewers into their own backyards to see how to create beautiful, welcoming spaces using plants and products that are achievable, affordable, attractive, and in tune with the natural environment. A Growing Passion has earned several awards, including a 2010 regional Emmy.
Nan is an advisor to the San Diego County Water Authority and sits on the Invasive Plant Committee for the City of Encinitas. She co-founded a 5,000 square foot school garden and chairs the annual Encinitas Garden Festival & Tour. She is a board member of the Garden Writer’s Association and a founding board member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, San Diego District.
Before delving into the professional gardening world, Nan created curricula, training programs, and educational materials for Fortune 500 companies, zoos, aquaria, and not-for-profit organizations. Her ability to take complex information and create effective educational programs is one of her greatest strengths, and a major source of her successes.

Don't Plant This - how to avoid mistakes in your garden
There are many wonderful garden plants, but there are also a bunch of stinkers. In this talk, Nan Sterman will help you avoid plants that reproduce too freely, that swallow up a house in a season, are prone to disease, attract unwanted “visitors” to the garden, invade nearby native habitats, are impossible to train, or will be with you forever, whether you want them or not. Be forewarned! Be forearmed! Don’t plant this!
